I remember the first time I heard these words:
No amount of pushing will heal burnout
It hit me right in my chest. I knew it was true but I was still going at 100 miles an hour and at the end of it all found myself questioning my work, my passion and why I do what I do. I couldn’t understand why this was happening until I realised, in my quest to be there for everybody else, I stopped being there for me. I stopped doing things that lit my up, I stopped working on myself, I stopped living and it sucked. Sound familiar?
That was Christmas 2015 and I shared part of my journey on social media and got such an overwhelming response from so many women in varied situations but feeling exactly the same way!
I realised then that this problem of pushing, striving, working ourselves to the bone is a universal problem among us women. We always feel like we have to be doing more, being more, right? God forbid we actually stop long enough to look at where we are and see how far we are away from our truest desires.
I made a commitment back in January to live a life of space, expansiveness, rest, joy, and recuperation and I did okay for a while. I put in a lot more self care type things into my schedule like taking more baths, doing my nails, going for massages etc. But then it started to feel like just another thing I needed to put on my to do list and it became stressful to find time to look after myself. I felt like I was going around in circles and not getting anywhere fast.
So just a few weeks ago I looked at my life and realised that to have the impact I want to have in this world AND be joyful and feel incredibly alive doing it, something had to change. So I had a complete LIFE OVERHAUL. I journaled for days, cried A LOT and wrestled with my limiting beliefs about myself that I didn’t even know existed. And at the end of all of that I realised that no amount of pushing will heal burnout… none, period, end of subject.
The only way to really be alive in this world, to live a life of abundance is to start with YOU, to take care of you, to be there for YOU.
That often conjures up feelings of selfishness, excessiveness and a whole host of negative self talk. Why? Because self-care is just not valued in our society, especially for women! No-one has time for that nowadays right? WRONG
I made a bold decision and said that rather than living a life where self care was another thing on my to do list, I was going to live a life where I took care of me at the core of it and everything else would FLOW from that place. And I’ve got to tell you, since making that small but life changing decision I show up in the world in a totally different way. I am a better wife, coach, friend and woman as a result and I feel AMAZING. I feel fulfilled, joyful and excited, not tired, stressed and like my life is crammed full to the brim.
The truth is every single thing we do in life is a decision. We like to tell ourselves that’s not the case because that gets us off the hook. Like you might be thinking ‘but Amanda, I HAVE to work’. Well yes, you might need to bring in an income but does it have to be doing a job you hate and dread to go to everyday? I think not.
So take some time today to run yourself a bubble bath, put on a face mask and then journal on what is YOUR TRUTH, what do you want in life and how far have you strayed from it? Then make a commitment to get back to what is true for you.
